All auctions / Miscellaneous / Italian school (XIX) - Vicolo della Ciociaria
Oil painting on burlap canvas depicting 'Vicolo della Ciociaria', anonymous 19th-century artist This painting represents a scene of daily life in an alley of Ciociaria, a historic region of southern Lazio, capturing the distinctive atmosphere of narrow medieval streets with their rustic architecture and popular activities. The work probably dates from the second half of the nineteenth century, a period when artists were particularly drawn to portraying picturesque urban scenes and street life in rural Italian regions. The technique of oil on ancient jute canvas lends the work a unique texture and testifies to the artistic practices of the era. These paintings of Italian urban vedute are highly appreciated by 19th-century art collectors, by enthusiasts of Lazio history, and by connoisseurs of Italian vedutismo. Interest in these works stems from their ability to document daily life and the historical architecture of Italian cities and towns, offering an authentic glimpse into a bygone era. Such paintings are especially sought after by Italian and international collectors who wish to possess visual testimonies of the rich cultural heritage of Italian regions less represented in art.
