Italian school (XVI) - La Pietá

Italian school (XVI) - La Pietá

Italian School (Late 16th Century) - The Pietà: The Virgin Mary with Christ dead Technical sheet and fields for Catawiki Artist: Italian School (Late 16th century / ca. 1580–1600) Technique: Oil on canvas Era / Period: 16th Century (1550–1599 / late 16th century) Style: Mannerism / Late Italian Renaissance Theme: Religion / The Pietà / Passion of Christ Framed: Classic gold wooden frame in fine gold Condition: Good state of conservation for its age (over four centuries), preserving craquelure and natural texture. Total measurements: 80×64 Canvas measurements: 74×57 Description of the work: Excellent devotional oil painting on canvas attributed to the Italian School of the late 16th century, addressing the poignant iconographic theme of the Pietà. The composition adopts an intimate, half-length framing, focusing all dramatic intensity on the physical and affective interaction between the Virgin Mary and Christ recently descended from the cross. Mary, covered by a night blue veil and a reddish tunic with a white collar, holds her Son’s head with infinite maternal tenderness while gazing at his inert face with a serene and restrained expression. The figure of Jesus displays a achieved anatomical morbidity in the torso and arm, with a cerulean pallor and details of the wounds and streams of blood from the crown of thorns and the martyrdom. The shadowy background subtly opens toward a distant twilight mountain landscape, typical of Italian Mannerism. The piece stands out for its volumetric and sculptural treatment of the figures, the delicate drawing of the hands, and a masterful use of devotional chiaroscuro, heir to the painting tradition of central-northern Italy (with echoes of the Bologna and Rome circles of late Mannerism). Regarding the late 16th-century Italian school (Late Cinquecento), Italian workshops led the aesthetic transformation driven by the directives of the Council of Trent, promoting a religious iconography of deep piety, doctrinal clarity, and emotional connection with the devotee. This work synthesizes the formal rigor and anatomical drawing of Mannerism with the devotional pathos that anticipates the early Baroque, recalling pietist models spread in Italy by masters such as Sebastiano del Piombo, Daniele da Volterra, or the early initiators of the Bologna school. A piece of notable interest for collectors of old master paintings and classic masters of the high period. Condition report The work is in generally good condition with some minor losses to be restored. Canvas properly stretched on original frame. Paint layer stable, with impastoed texture typical of the technique used. No significant losses or invasive restorations observed. Classic gilded frame with minor wear in keeping with its age.
