Italian school (XVII) - Il giudizio di Paride

Italian school (XVII) - Il giudizio di Paride

Italian School of the XVII Century - Veneto-Emilian sphere “The Judgment of Paris” - Oil on canvas - Period: 1670-1700 - Veneto-Emilian sphere, late 17th century - Dimensions: 77 x 59 cm in an antique frame - Canvas: 66.5 x 50 cm SUBJECT AND ICONOGRAPHY The scene depicts one of the most celebrated episodes of classical mythology, The Judgment of Paris, a mythological preface to the Trojan War. According to the story, Paris, a Trojan prince raised as a shepherd, is tasked with deciding which of Juno, Minerva, and Venus is the fairest, awarding the golden apple. The choice falls on Venus, who promises him the love of Helen. In the painting the tale is condensed into a group of four protagonists. On the right, Paris appears, seated on a rock and wrapped in a wide red drape. The naked torso and the leaning pose towards the goddesses emphasize his role as judge. In the center-left is immediately recognizable Minerva/Athena, characterized by the feathered helmet and the long spear. The presence of the helmet constitutes one of the traditional iconographic attributes of the goddess in The Judgment of Paris. The other two female figures correspond to Juno and Venus. Particularly important is the young woman kneeling in the foreground, seen almost completely from behind, whose torso twist constitutes the formal fulcrum of the composition. The isolated female figure at far left, accompanied by a light drape, closes the scene with an almost theatrical cadence. A small figure also appears in the far background right, inserted into the dark landscape. ⸻ COMPOSITIONAL ANALYSIS The construction of the scene is decidedly studied. The artist arranges the protagonists in a semi-circular sequence that guides the eye: The movement culminates in the meeting between the kneeling figure and Paris. A very effective feature is the system of opposing diagonals: the spear held by Minerva rises to the right, while the kneeling woman’s body introduces an opposite diagonal. Paris completes this structure through the strong chromatic mass of the red drape. The kneeling figure is probably the most successful invention of the work: the illuminated back, the torso twist, and the diagonally projected leg into space produce considerable depth. This is therefore not a naive composition: behind the image there is a recognizable cultured figurative tradition, nourished by Italian Mannerist and post-Mannerist lineage. ⸻ STYLISTIC ANALYSIS The work preserves several elements deriving from the late Mannerist culture: elongated female bodies, relatively small heads, artificial twists, elegance of poses, and predominance of line over naturalistic description. At the same time, the strong chiaroscuro contrast, the greater solidity of the anatomies, and Paris’ red drape introduce elements fully characteristic of the seventeenth century. Particularly significant are: * the elongated anatomy of the female figures; * small, sharp profiles; * the kneeling figure built through a complex twist; * the Minerva almost statue-like; * the palette dominated by light flesh tones emerging from a very dark background; * the use of red as the main chromatic accent; * the landscape reduced to a stage set. Overall, therefore, a figurative culture between late Mannerism and seventeenth-century classicism, rather than a fully mature eighteenth-century language. ⸻ ATTRIBUTIONAL SCOPE The composition nonetheless shows connections with the broad pictorial culture developed in northern Italy from the late 16th to the 17th century, in which Mannerist models continued to circulate alongside new Classicist solutions. It is interesting to recall how The Judgment of Paris was disseminated through paintings, drawings, and especially engravings. One of the fundamental prototypes was Marcantonio Raimondi’s engraving after Raphael, dating to around 1513-14, which enjoyed enormous figurative fortune. Even in the 17th century the subject remained particularly widespread: Francesco Albani, for example, produced a famous version around 1650-60. FRAME: Frame: molded and gilded wooden frame, neoclassical taste, with a wide flat lip and an inner molded decorative continuous relief motif. Italian manufacture, late 18th – early 19th century, with gold leaf affected by natural abrasions, wear, and small gaps. CONDITION REPORT Support: The work has been lined/rintelated. The canvas currently appears sufficiently stable and evenly tensions. The frame is wooden, of traditional construction, with a vertical central crossbar. Paint surface: From the images the surface appears overall stable. There is widespread craquelure, generally consistent with aging of the painting medium. Localized abrasions and thinning are observable, especially in the dark areas and in the more delicate flesh tones. Retouchings and paint integrations from previous restorations are plausible. The surface varnish seems to show some degree of alteration/oxidation, with a consequent reduction in contrast and a modification of the legibility of darker tones. I do not observe on the photographs any macroscopic lifting or widespread flaking of the paint layer. Overall condition: Fair/good for age and previous conservation interventions. *** Photographic note Some photographs of the work were taken with professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better readability of the composition, details, and painting matter. This lighting may cause slight variations in color perception and brightness compared with viewing the work directly. The photographs are intended solely for illustrative and documentary purposes. The frame is provided free of charge and as a gift with the work and should therefore be considered an accessory element, not included in the financial valuation of the painting. Given the natural fragility of antique and gilded frames, any damage, chipping, breakage, or losses of parts of the frame occurring during transport or shipment cannot be the subject of refunds, compensation, or dispute regarding the value of the work. The packaging will, however, be prepared with the utmost care to ensure, as far as possible, a safe transport. Insured shipping Attribution Expertise *** For historical reasons the work cannot be shipped outside the European community / insured shipment in a wooden crate
