Madonna of the Blood with the Child Scope: Italian devotional painter / Alpine region Oil on canvas (repainted) Period: 1600/1650 Measurements: 36 x 27 cm *** Work offered without reserve price Inscriptions: painted cartouche at the bottom with a Latin inscription partially legible, apparently referring to the Virgin; additional epigraphic and symbolic elements are present on the mantle. Condition: fair in relation to the age and the conservation history of the work. Description and iconography The painting depicts the Madonna of the Blood, shown frontally and crowned, with the Child Jesus in front of the bust. The Virgin wears a broad dark mantle, decorated with stars and golden symbolic motifs, while a large radiating halo emphasizes its sacred nature. The Child is also nimbate and blesses with his right hand. Particularly significant is the motif of drops and traces of blood on the Virgin’s face, clearly highlighted on the forehead, along the nose and at the lower part of the visage. This detail constitutes the distinctive iconographic element of the image and refers to the tradition of miraculous images of the Madonna of the Blood. The composition has a strongly hieratic and devotional character: frontal composition, anatomical simplification, fixed looks and the use of gold, red and blue-black confer the image with an almost iconic presence. Rather than pursuing painterly naturalism, the author seems to privilege the cultic function of the image. Stylistic observations The work appears to derive from an older iconographic prototype, reproduced according to modes typical of popular devotional painting. The strongly frontal construction of the Virgin, the Child superimposed on the mother figure, the elaborate crown, and the starry mantle suggest a revival of a revered image. The painting shows a relatively synthetic technique, with marked contours and highlights that define faces, drapery and ornaments. The decorations of the crown and mantle are achieved through small brushstrokes intended to simulate precious stones, embroidery and metallic applications. General condition: signs of wear and defects consistent with the period of the work With certificate of sale and legitimate provenance
