All auctions / Books, Maps & Manuscripts / Italy - Liguria / Genoa; Pierre Mortier ( 1661-1711) - Genoa - 1701-1720

Magnificent perspective view of the city of Genoa, richly engraved and animated by numerous ships in the harbor and in the maritime surroundings. The work shows with great precision the city walls, the fortified harbor, the Lanterna, the internal streets and the main buildings of the city. In the lower right part there is a numbered legend identifying the main places and monuments (churches, fortifications, gates, squares). This is one of the best-known views by the cartographer and engraver Pierre Mortier, who in the late seventeenth century published in Amsterdam a series of European views drawn from French and Dutch sources (including Blaeu and De Fer). This representation of Genoa is among the most spectacular, appreciated for the quality of the line and the topographic accuracy. Small white-edge tear (see photo)
