RARISSIMA ORATION OF FUNERAL FOR FRANCIS I OF FRANCE, WRITTEN IN PADUA BY THE YOUNG GIROLAMO VIDA OF CAPODISTRIA Rare original edition of the Funeral Oration on the death of the most Christian king of France, Francis I, composed by the young Girolamo Vida of Capodistria and printed in Padua by Paolo Meietto in 1583. The work was born during the author’s Padua university years, when he was only twenty, and is dedicated to his Capodistrian friend Ottonello Belli. Vida imagines himself in Paris immediately after Francis I’s death and constructs an extensive panegyric of the sovereign, praising his clemency, liberality, military valor, justice, and magnanimity. An interesting document of Istrian-Padovan humanist culture at the end of the Cinquecento, as well as evidence of the Italian fortune of the figure of Francis I. Frontispiece richly ornamented with a large typographical mark of Paolo Meietto. REASONS FOR COLLECTING / WHY TO BUY EDIZIONE ORIGINALE DEL 1583 – First standalone appearance of this rare youthful writing by Girolamo Vida, printed in Padua by Paolo Meietto. FRANCESCO I DI FRANCIA – Panegyric dedicated to one of the sovereigns symbolizing the European Renaissance, rival of Charles V and a major protagonist of the Italian Wars. RARO DOCUMENTO ISTRIANO-PADOVANO – Work by a young Capodistrian intellectual trained in the Padovan university and academic environment of the second half of the Cinquecento. IMPORTANTE TESTIMONIANZA BIOGRAFICA – The dedication to Ottonello Belli offers a vivid picture of the conversations, studies, and intellectual life shared by young Capodistrian humanists between Padua and Istria. MARKET VALUE The work is decidedly uncommon on the antiquarian market, especially compared to the more widely available works of the almost-homonymous Cremonese Marco Girolamo Vida. For a complete and well-preserved exemplar of the original 1583 edition, a guideline valuation can be placed in the €500–800 range. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION Subsequent binding in cardboard covered with marbled paper in shades of gray, purple, and black. Leaves with slight browning, some small stains and marginal halos. In the initial text, ornate woodcuts and marginal references to classical authors. In old books with a centuries-long history, some imperfections may be present, not always noted in the description. FULL TITLE AND AUTHOR Oratione funebre nella morte del Re Christianissimo di Francia Francesco Primo. In Padoa, appresso Paulo Meietto, 1583. Girolamo Vida, called Iustinopolitano. CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE The work represents an interesting episode in the Italian reception of the figure of Francis I of France, who died in 1547 but was still celebrated decades later as a model of chivalrous and Renaissance patron-king. Vida builds his praise according to the models of classical and humanist rhetoric, making the French king the embodiment of the virtues of the ideal prince: justice, clemency, liberality, military strength, and political capacity. The text also gains particular value because it arose among students and academics from Istria active in Padua. In the dedication to Ottonello Belli, Vida recalls conversations held in Capodistria about the comparison between Francis I and Charles V and tells of having composed the oration during Padua’s Carnival, preferring this literary exercise to worldly amusements. It is thus at once a political panegyric, a rhetorical exercise, and an autobiographical document. BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR Girolamo Vida, called Iustinopolitano because he came from Capodistria, was a Istrian writer and academic active in the second half of the Cinquecento. In youth he studied in Padua, where he came into contact with other Capodistrian cultural figures, including Ottonello Belli. In 1583, at twenty, he published this Oratione funebre dedicated to Francis I. In the following years he became a prominent figure in the Capodistrian Palladian Academy, of which he also took a leadership role. Among his works are Il Sileno, a dialogue on amorous and philosophical topics, the boscareccian fable Filliria, and the Cento dubbi amorosi. His production testifies to the vitality of cultural connections among Istria, Padua, Vicenza, and Venice at the end of the sixteenth century. PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION The Oratione funebre was published independently in Padua in 1583 by Paolo Meietto and belongs to the earliest phase of Girolamo Vida Iustinopolitano’s production. Its circulation appears to have been limited and tied mainly to academic and university circles in Veneto and Istria. Surviving copies are today quite scarce, and the work is far less common than the author’s later writings. The presence of Meietto’s printer’s mark, the personal dedication to Ottonello Belli, and the still fully sixteenth-century typography make this edition particularly interesting from the perspective of book history.
