Extraordinary image by photographer and reporter Ivo Saglietti (1948-2023) taken during a report on the funeral of Yasser Arafat in 2004. ... Vintage print, in excellent condition, gelatin silver coated paper, stamped and signed on the back by collection. Ivo Saglietti was born in Toulon in 1948. He spent his adolescence in Alba. In 1968 he was in Turin, a Political Science student in those turbulent and restless years, politically active in the "Movement." Here he began his work as a cameraman, taking part in the creation of some politically-socially themed reports. In 1975 he began to work in photography, roaming the streets and squares of the protest. In 1978 he moved to Paris, where, thanks to his friendship with Mario Dondero, he refined his photographic knowledge and came into contact with the world of photojournalism. From there began his travels as Reporter-Photographe, first with French agencies, then for American agencies and major international magazines (Newsweek, Der Spiegel, Time, The New York Times), for which he covered crisis and conflict situations in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans on assignment. At the same time he began working on long-term projects, starting with "The Sound of Swords" (Il Rumore delle Sciabole), a reportage from Pinochet's Chile (1986-1988), from which his first photographic book emerged. In 1992 he won the World Press Photo prize for a report on a cholera epidemic in Peru; in 1999 an honorable mention at the same competition for a report on Kosovo and, in 2011, for a photograph of Srebrenica, Bosnia. In 2000 he became an associated member of the German photojournalism agency Zeitenspiegel Reportagen. Over time he increasingly oriented himself toward long-term photographic projects, which allowed him to tell stories in a more personal, articulated way, and less conditioned by the needs and requests of the weeklies. Among these are the reportage tracing the slave route from Benin to the sugarcane plantations of the Dominican Republic and Haiti; the one on the three major infectious diseases (AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis); the one about the possible dialogue between religions through the communal experience of the ancient Syriac Antiochene monastery of Deir Mar Musa el-Habsqi; and finally the one on borders in the Mediterranean and the Middle East and the Balkans. He has exhibited his photographs in many exhibitions in important venues, in Italy and abroad. Many publications, including an autobiographical text accompanied by a wide series of images, The Restless Gaze. A Photographer on the Move (Postcart, 2021 and 2024), curated by Federico Montaldo. He passed away in Genoa on December 2, 2023. (Saglietti Archive)
