J.-B. Charcot - Le « Français » au Pôle Sud

Fascinating original edition illustrated with a frontispiece portrait, a folding map, 300 illustrations and photographic reproductions in and out of the text - This work constitutes the account of the first great French Antarctic expedition led by Dr. Jean-Baptiste Charcot aboard the Français, undertaken between 1903 and 1905 and intended to explore, chart, and scientifically study regions still very poorly known of Antarctica - The book sits within the period often designated as the Heroic Age of polar exploration, when several European nations organized expeditions to Arctic and Antarctic regions in order to clarify their geography and study their natural phenomena - For Charcot, however, the objective is not solely to pursue geographical achievement or to vie for reaching the South Pole, but to conduct a true multidisciplinary scientific mission in which every movement of the ship must allow the accumulation of observations useful to the knowledge of the southern regions - Jean-Baptiste Charcot - Le « Français » au Pôle Sud. Followed by an Exposé of some of the scientific works by the members of the Staff MMs. Matha, Rey, Pléneau, Turquet, Gourdon, Charcot - 1905 - Ernest Flammarion - (12)-xxxvii-483 Pages.
