Set of three signed photographs by Anthony Perkins — Filming of “Les Misérables” (1978) Description Photographer: J.-Jacques Damiens (Photo Damiens studio, 10 Avenue Émile Zola, 24120 Terrasson-Lavilledieu, Dordogne). Local photographer who covered the on-site filming; French nationality. Birth/death dates not documented. Subject: Anthony Perkins (1932–1992), American actor, photographed on the set of the TV film Les Misérables (1978), an Anglo-American production by Glenn Jordan, produced by Norman Rosemont Productions / ITC (Incorporated Television Company), in which Perkins plays Inspector Javert alongside Richard Jordan (Jean Valjean). Filming partly took place in Dordogne (Domme, Sarlat-la-Canéda, Abbaye de Cadouin), as confirmed by the CNC / Film France fiche. Title: Anthony Perkins on the set of Les Misérables, Terrasson-Lavilledieu Date of capture and print: 6 June 1978 (handwritten date on the reverse of each print). Vintage prints, made on the same date as the shooting. Process and technique: Black-and-white gelatin silver prints from the period (silver gelatin prints), mounted on matting/card for one of the three copies. Lot contents (3 photographs): - Anthony Perkins in full stage costume (top hat, dark frock coat), signing a document on the filming location; dedication “Anthony Perkins” accompanied by the note “Camille III” (reference to be specified) on the front of the print. - Anthony Perkins signing an autograph on the back of a garment, surrounded by the film crew and the public, in the presence of the director Norman Rosemont; dedication “Merci, Anthony Perkins, June '78”. - Anthony Perkins in city attire, a bag over his shoulder, in front of his dressing room (tag “HAIR” visible); dedication “Thanks for [...], Tony Perkins”. Edition: Unique vintage prints (not numbered editions; these are not prints of multiple editions). Signature/stamp details: - Each photograph bears an autograph dedication by Anthony Perkins in ink, applied directly to the front of the print (brown or black marker/pen depending on the copy). - Each reverse bears the photographer’s stamp: “Photo: J.-Jacques Damiens — 10, Avenue Émile Zola, 24120 Terrasson — Tél. 50-03-23 — R.M. 0 25 69 65 240”. - A handwritten caption on the reverse (by the photographer or a third party) explains the context: identifying Anthony Perkins in the role of Javert, noting the Anglo-American production of “Les Misérables,” the director Norman Rosemont, and the date “6 June 1978.” Provenance: Private collection assembled directly from the local press photographer who shot on the Dordogne set; the photographs have remained together since their creation. Documentation: - Original stamps and handwritten legends on the reverse of each print (photos attached). - Confirmation of the filming of The Misérables (1978) in Dordogne and Anthony Perkins’ role (Javert) by the Film France / CNC database. Condition: Period prints showing aging consistent with their origin (1978): light stains and pinholes, silvering/patina oxidation in places (notably on the first print), minor creases or handling marks. Dedicatory inscriptions clearly legible and stable. Overall condition consistent with press prints kept in a private collection for over 45 years. Contextual note (optional) Anthony Perkins, globally revealed by his role in Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960), here portrays Inspector Javert in this television adaptation of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, broadcast on CBS on December 27, 1978. Exterior filming took place notably around Domme, Sarlat-la-Canéda and the Abbey of Cadouin, in Dordogne — a shoot that left a mark on the region and sparked local curiosity, as evidenced by the presence of onlookers (including children) visible in one of the photographs. This lot stands as a rare, well-documented photographic record of a Hollywood presence on a Dordogne set in the late 1970s.
