Jacob Cats – J

Four antique copper engravings / etchings – Jacob Cats – “J. Cats Gedachten” – 18th century A remarkable ensemble of four fine 18th-century copper engravings, executed with very fine line and stipple work, each featuring a round scene within a rectangular frame. The four prints form, through their size, technique and imagery, a particularly harmonious whole. On one of the engravings, above the image, the words clearly read “J. CATS GEDACHTEN.” This refers to the Dutch poet, jurist and statesman Jacob Cats (1577–1660) and his work Gedachten op slapeloose nachten. From this work an illustrated edition appeared in 1710 with an engraved title frontispiece by Jan Goeree (1670–1731) and further engravings in the text. The work remained popular in the 18th century and was reissued several times. The Leiden eighth imprint of 1732, published by Jan van der Deyster, contained two engraved frontispieces after Jan Goeree and 28 engraved illustrations after Adriaen van der Venne. The prints offered here closely match the format and the classical, narrative visual language of such book illustrations from the first half of the 18th century. The subjects are very detailed: architecture, landscapes, groups of figures and Biblical or allegorical scenes are built from extremely fine engraving lines. Especially in the clothing, cloud formations and backgrounds the craftsmanship of the engraver is clearly visible. The prints are individually mounted on light-colored passe-partout boards and can thus be framed as a set immediately. A beautiful ensemble for the collector of old graphics, Dutch literature, emblemata and 18th-century book illustrations. Features * Set of 4 antique engravings * Technique: copper engraving / print on paper * Dating: probably first half of the 18th century * Dutch origin * One print with the inscription “J. CATS GEDACHTEN” * Related to the work of Jacob Cats * Classical round scenes * Very finely worked line and stipple technique * Religious, allegorical and narrative scenes * Each print separately mounted on passe-partout * Attractive as a four-part wall composition Condition The engravings are in a nice antique condition with age-related signs appropriate to their age. Local mild discoloration and small spots are visible. In particular one of the passe-partouts shows some foxing / age spotting. The print images themselves still show good detailing and contrast. Wear and age signs are shown in the photos. The photos form an important part of the condition description. A charming and historically interesting set of Dutch prints that is not only decoratively appealing but also has a direct connection with the rich Dutch book and print culture around Jacob Cats.
