Jacques De Gheyn II (1565-1629) - Soldato con fucile

Beautiful engraving from the series “The Exercise of Arms,” executed from original drawings by the same De Gheyn in his workshop, perhaps by Robert de Baudous, and published in 1607 by the same workshop. Sample with good margins, on laid paper, in good condition, only two cross-cuts restored and slight reddening on the right (see photo). Unsigned, on the right the number “17” of the series of 117, published in The Hague in 1607, after Count Jan van Nassau Siegen had commissioned De Gheyn in 1597 to design drawings for a manual on the exercise of arms for infantry and cavalry. This first edition was followed soon after by several editions in various languages (Dutch, French, German, English, Danish). Depicted is a full-length soldier loading his rifle with his right hand. New Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish), 357.II.
