Jaime Colson (1901-1975) - La femme aux roses

Oil on canvas (isorel) dated around 1940, depicting a woman's portrait with a bouquet of roses. Painting in a modernist spirit close to the painters of the New Objectivity. Signed Colson. Jaime Antonio Colson (1901-1975) Painter. Educated in Saint-Domingue, he already shows a keen interest in the arts. Encouraged by his mother, Colson studies at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. His early works are influenced by the 'noucentisme' or Catalanism, a return to roots contrary to modernism. He lived in Paris from 1924 to 1934, and he discovered the works of Picasso and De Chirico, which greatly influenced his painting style. Colson completely embraces Cubism and Surrealism while his financial situation is precarious. He leaves for Mexico in 1934 and organizes his first exhibitions, while exploring illustration. Colson goes to Havana in 1937, teaches there and lives there for a while before returning to his homeland. General Trujillo commissions him a portrait. But Colson represented him in a way that was too realistic—along the lines of the mulatto he was, and his work is rejected. Because of World War II, he moves to Barcelona and paints wall frescoes in Majorca. Trujillo recalls him to become director of the School of Fine Arts of Saint-Domingue. Part of his works from this period mysteriously disappear; the reasons are still controversial. Colson's works blend Cubism, Surrealism, Symbolism, Expressionism, and Neoclassicism in a style described as 'neohumanist.' The mystery and solitude of De Chirico's paintings are found in Colson's work. Moreover, he was influenced by the writings of Sigmund Freud. He died of pulmonary edema in Saint-Domingue on November 20, 1975 at the age of 75. Good overall condition, some wear to note and scratches. Wooden frame. Dimensions: 65 / 54 cm
