Jalisco Greenstone Three Quarter Grooved Axe Head

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A finely polished greenstone axe head of elongated form, carved with a distinctive three-quarter groove near the butt for hafting. The stone exhibits a deep olive-green tone with natural mineral inclusions and weathered earthen deposits that accentuate its ancient surface. Axes of this type were practical woodworking tools but also held symbolic and ceremonial importance in West Mexican cultures, where greenstone was valued for its durability and luminous color. Size: 3.8" L x 1.5" W x 1.9" H (9.7 cm x 3.8 cm x 4.8 cm) Item # 199427
