All auctions / Arts & Graphics / James 'Drunken' Robertson (British, fl.1825-1836) Six studies of churches

pen and brown ink and washes, (6), 28 x 37cm and similar; unframed, By descent from Alderman Richard Turner (1881-1982), Bedford. Robertson is known as the 'drunken drawing master.' These six landscape drawings are characteristic of Robertson's quick but formulaic style of watercolour drawing, mostly executed in brown monochrome. As Huon Mallalieu has plausibly suggested, he may also have worked at the Derby china works to paint pictorial decorations on the wares. His rapid, schematic brushwork manner indeed suggests such decorations. As well as his drunkenness, he was a frequent inmate of the workhouse, but besides these two facts, little else is known of his life. Condition Report, Condition Report, Executed on buff paper and hinge mounted to sheets of thick paper with tape applied to the upper corners verso. The exception is Kirkstall Abbey which is loose and has been executed on blue paper with wear to the edge and a vertical fold to the centre. A little time staining and fading to all.
