This late 18th-century portrait miniature features a white glass paste bas relief profile bust of Dr. and Minister Alexander Waugh (1754-1827), created by James Tassie. The sitter was a prominent Scottish minister associated with the Wells Street Chapel in London. The high-relief bust is mounted on a dark velvet ground and set within a period wooden frame featuring a gilt inner liner. The truncation of the shoulder is inscribed with the names of the sitter and the artist's location, reading ALEX. WAUGH. A. M. / WELLS STREET CONG. / 1794. The reverse of the frame contains a contemporary paper backing with a handwritten inscription that repeats ALEX WAUGH / WELLS STREET / 1794. Several provenance markers are attached to the back, including a circular label for the Rubin Collection and an urn-shaped label for the Dean and Mary Rockwell Collection, numbered 1047.
