Paper here and there reinforced in the margins with a few old damp spots. ** ANDEL (Jan van), born Oct 11, 1839 in ’s-Hertogenbosch, died in Gorkum June 29, 1910. He attended the gymnasium in Tiel, where Rector Dr. Tydeman taught him the classical languages, further prepared himself at the Theological School in Kampen, where he befriended Simon Evenhuis and Pieter Ariëns Lanting, studied much German theology, surprised his fellow students with his great talent for improvisation, and was a great admirer of Adolphe Monod’s sermons. In 1861 he married Anna Henriette Brummelkamp, who died in 1875. Later he remarried J. v.d. Wetering. At the age of 22 he became a Reformed (chr. geref.) pastor in Zutphen (1861), afterwards traveling instructor in North Holland (1873), then served the congregations of Heusden (1877), Leeuwarden (1879-93) and Gorkum, where he earned honorable emeritus in 1907. He was a very sought-after preacher, especially during the Frisian years. Although a connaisseur and admirer of mineralogy and ethnology, his press work was exclusively theological. Among his works are: The Kingdom of Man. A Lecture (Kampen 1873); The Destiny of Woman (1875); The Dawn of Jesus’ Life (Heusden 1878); Jesus’ Last Farewell (Heusden 1879); Turning Points in Jesus’ History. Lecture (Leeuwarden 1880); The Little Prophets for Domestic Religious Instruction, arranged (Leeuwarden 1881); From Adam to Abraham (Heusden 1882); Jesus’ Teaching (Heusden 1883); The Mosaic Law (Heusden 1883); A Concise Idea of God’s Counsel, revealed to us in the Scriptures. In Questions and Answers (Leeuwarden 1884); Paul’s Gospel (Kampen 1885); Remembrance of Our Dead (Leeuwarden 1885); Manual for the Practice of Sacred History, 2 vols. (Leeuwarden 1886-88); A Brief Understanding of Christian Confession. Hold What You Have. Address given at Assen, at the opening of the Synod of the Reformed Church on August 13 (Winterswijk 1888); From the Scriptures (Kampen 1892); Admonition and Comfort (Leeuwarden 1893); Questions and Answers about Biblical History (Leiden 1894); Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians for the Congregation Edited (Leiden 1894); Seeds (Leeuwarden 1896); Ecclesiastical Fusion (Leeuwarden 1899); John’s Gospel Explained to the Congregation (Leiden 1900); The Communion of Saints (Kampen 1902); The Gospel According to Luke Explained to the Congregation (Leiden 1902); Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians Explained to the Congregation (Leiden 1903); Paul’s Letter to the Romans Read with the Congregation (Kampen 1904); Paul’s Two Letters to Timothy Explained (Leiden 1904); The Letter to the Hebrews Explained to the Congregation (Kampen 1906); Pastoral Letters (Kampen 1907); Paul’s Letter to the Colossians Explained to the Congregation (Kampen 1907); Anthology from ‘The Evening Star’ (Kampen 1908). After his death, further works appeared: Vademecum Pastorale (Kampen 1910) and From the Fountain of Salvation (Kampen 1914). These writings are characterized by a graceful form. For many years the author contributed to the weekly De Bazuin, and belonged to the editorial staff of the periodicals Evangelische Getuigenissen (1862), De Zendeling (1869), De Avondster (1876), De Vrije Kerk (1883). His Chiliasstic ideas; not foreign to him, and the mild evangelical temperament that pervades his writings, brought him more than once into difficulties with the more strict Calvinists, but were ultimately tolerated due to his high personal stature. A contemporary judged him thus: ‘He has been one of the leaders of Reformed life in the second half of the previous century; one of those peculiarly characteristic personalities of the second generation of the men of the Schism, who especially through their own formation knew how to unfold the riches of the spirit, and whose originality had not been lost by a uniform education. In both his preaching and his writings he shared the fruit of his deep scriptural study in a literary-artistic form.’ He was the chairman of the United Synod in Amsterdam, which on June 17, 1892 brought the Reformed Church and the Reformed Churches into one church federation.
