Unique photograph from my private collection of the well-known Jane Evelyn Atwood bearing the EFTI seal (Escuela de Fotografía y Centro de Imagen / Centro Internacional de Fotografía y Cine) was one of the most prestigious and historic centers for photography and cinema education in Spain. The series: It is part of her iconic and award-winning project on blind people ("The Blind" / "Extérieur nuit"), in which she worked for a decade (beginning in the 1980s) by venturing into specialized schools in several countries to document how they navigate in a world of seeing people. It is a photograph with a lot of sensitivity for collectors. Jane Evelyn Atwood (New York, 1947) is a renowned American photographer based in Paris since 1971. Her work stands out for long-term documentary projects focused on marginalized communities and on people at the margins or excluded from society. Throughout her career she has received prestigious international awards, among which stand out the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography (1980) — precisely obtained thanks to her series about children and blind people —, the Oskar Barnack Award, the Grand Prix Paris Match for Photojournalism and the Lucie Award for Documentary Photography, in addition to being named Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. Her work is part of institutional collections and galleries of international relevance. Throughout her international career, Jane Evelyn Atwood has been honored with the most prestigious awards and recognitions in photojournalism and documentary photography: W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography (1980): She was the first photographer to receive this prestigious humanistic award, driven precisely by her project on children and blind people. Grand Prix Paris Match du Photojournalisme (1990): Awarded for her striking report on women’s prisons. Ernst Haas Award (1994): International recognition of her visual and narrative excellence. Leica Oskar Barnack Award (1997): Granted for her deep and extended documentary work in female prisons. Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography (1998): Award given in the United States for her mastery in reportage photography. Grand Prix Photo Albert Khan (2018): Recognition of her career and contribution to humanist photography in Paris. Lucie Award for Documentary Photography (2018): Distinction awarded in New York for her vital contribution to the documentary genre. Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters (2023): Appointment by the French Ministry of Culture (Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) in recognition of her cultural contribution.
