Jane Peterson (American, 1876–1965), “Fête,” gouache and charcoal on beige paper, depicting an elegant outdoor evening celebration beneath a canopy of trees, illuminated by glowing lanterns, with tables and fashionably dressed party goers below. With Rothschild Fine Arts label and other gallery label on reverse. In a fine quality Lowy giltwood gallery frame. Image 17.5 x 23.5, frame 27.5 x 33.5”.Auctioneer’s Note: while unsigned, this piece has been authenticated in 1986 by Patricia Jobe Pierce of Pierce Galleries, Inc., Hingham, MA, a gallery that represented the artist. She notes the stylistic qualities, brushwork, execution, and color, as characteristic of the artist's mature period, circa 1935 and later. Rothschild Fine Arts, however, attributed it to an earlier date, 1918, as noted on their label. It was purchased May 1986 from Rothschild Fine Art, by current owner. Lot includes photocopies of the 1986 appraisal, Rothschild Fine Arts framing invoice dated March 25, 1987, and a 2011 appraisal assessing replacement value at $50,000.
