JAPANESE MUSHA NINYO WARRIOR DOLL

Edo period, ca. AD 1603 - 1868 > A Japanese musha ningyo warrior doll posed with one knee raised, wearing armour over richly patterned robes. The pale face is framed by dark hair, and the layered costume is secured with cords and fittings. Musha ningyo are warrior dolls associated with seasonal displays for Tango no Sekku, traditionally Boys' Day on 5 May. Heroes, armour and weapons expressed hopes for a child's health, courage and future success, translating martial ideals into a domestic ceremonial setting. > > Size: 350mm x 270mm; Weight: 825g > Provenance: Prince Collection, 1990s2014; Ex.
