JAPANESE MUSHA NINYO WARRIOR DOLL

Edo period, ca. AD 1603 - 1868 > A Japanese musha ningyo warrior doll seated in a wide-legged pose, wearing a crested helmet and layered armour over textile robes. Dark hair frames the pale face, and the hands are held before the body. Musha ningyo are warrior dolls associated with seasonal displays for Tango no Sekku, traditionally Boys' Day on 5 May. Heroes, armour and weapons expressed hopes for a child's health, courage and future success, translating martial ideals into a domestic ceremonial setting. > > Size: 430mm x 300mm; Weight: 1.26kg > Provenance: Prince Collection, 1990s2014; Ex.
