Japanese Stoneware Tsubo - Ceramic - Japan - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

Large Japanese Tsubo jar with incised basketry pattern, with impressed potter’s seal – Japan – Shōwa period or later (20th century). A striking hand-thrown stoneware « Tsubo » (壺, jar), its whole body carved with combed lines, chevron hatching and tear-shaped gouges like woven basketry. The olive-grey glaze pools glassy green in every cut while the rust-brown clay glows through on the ridges, a warm and tactile piece that changes with the light. In the Japanese tradition, a ceramic is not only made of earth: it keeps the memory of earth, water and fire. This tsubo carries that spirit. Its glaze recalls moss on a temple stone after rain; its carved surface, the bark of an old pine or the woven reeds of a riverbank. Nothing is repeated exactly, as nothing in nature is. Placed in a calm corner, in the spirit of the tokonoma alcove, it invites a moment of stillness, empty, or holding a single branch chosen with the season: plum blossom in spring, a maple twig in autumn. Such is the quiet beauty of wabi-sabi, simple, modest and alive. Dimensions: H approx. 22 cm x W approx. 22 cm Weight: 1.6kg kg (Boxed 2.2 kg) This vase is from my personal collection of Japan collectibles acquired in Japanese galleries.
