Historical front letter — Ingres's acceptance of the direction of the Académie de France à Rome, one of the turning points of his career. Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780 - 1867) French painter, was appointed director of the Académie de France à Rome (Villa Medici) at the end of 1834, in place of Horace Vernet, and took office in 1835. Paris, 24. [9bre - Novembre] 1834. " Monsieur le Comte, I have the honor to inform you that I depart... to go to ROME to fulfill the duties of Director of the Royal School of Fine Arts which have been entrusted to me by His Majesty. I therefore address to you, Monsieur, the resignation as a member of the Consultative Committee of the Graveuse, and I beg you, Monsieur le Comte, to receive, and convey to my colleagues, the regrets I feel at not being able to participate in the Committee's work.
