Since 1956, Jean Claude Picot has worked exclusively as a professional artist. He is greatly influenced by the works of the Fauvist masters such as Vlaminck, Derain, and Matisse, whose exuberant canvases drew attention in the first decade of the 20th century for their revolutionary use of color, texture, and abstract form. These artists inspired Jean-Claude PICOT for decades and one can find this influence in his work. Picot developed a unique style reminiscent of a post-impressionist application of color, combined with the expressive qualities of form and line. His compositions are often soothing, carrying his own joie de vivre. He often captures the liveliness, romance, and essence of the landscape as a favorite subject, though he also paints still lifes, urban landscapes, markets, and festival scenes. All of his work is imbued with the same bright, joyful character and is immediately identifiable. Since 1947, he has exhibited in more than fifty solo exhibitions around the world, including shows in the United States, Belgium, Norway, and Australia. Picot spends part of the year in the south of France and is closely associated with the Côte d’Azur—its visitors, its beaches, and its ports filled with boats. His work is full of natural beauty and features breathtaking panoramic views flooded with the unique Mediterranean light. Picot works in a post-impressionist manner, reducing flowers, trees, houses, and figures to their essential forms. In reviews of Picot’s most recent solo exhibitions in Paris, Bordeaux, and Oslo, critics have noted the affinities between the masters of Impressionism and early 20th-century Fauvism with Picot’s work. Today, in the 21st century, Picot continues the tradition of the great French landscape painters. Picot actively works in many media — oil, acrylic, watercolor, printmaking, ceramics, and more recently serigraphy and embellished serigraphy — which beautifully capture his vibrant color and pictorial technique. His work is a favorite among international collectors and is represented in prestigious collections around the world.
