1a) The engraving collects three distinct studies or fragments from masters of painting, identified by the inscriptions under each figure: • At the top left: A Madonna with Child taken from a work by Benedetto Luti (indicated by the inscription "B. Luto"). • In the center bottom: Two roosters in a courtyard reproduced from a painting by Jacopo Bassano preserved at Palazzo Borghese (inscription "du Bassan Palais Borghese"). • On the right: A nude female figure seated, seen from the back, taken from a painting by Paolo Veronese also housed at Palazzo Borghese (inscription "Paul Veronese Palais Borghese a Rome"). 2a) The engraving is based on a famous painting or classical relief by Nicolas Poussin, then kept in Rome at Palazzo Chigi. This particular graphic translation was produced in the second half of the eighteenth century by two important figures on the French art scene; 2 Engraving on a single printed sheet, copper-plate print on laid paper, signed and dated, good impression of the plate. Support: laid paper with fillets, watermark bearing the letters "V, triangle and F" State: excellent black-and-white inking, good condition with slight traces of foxing and browning as in the photo; Insured shipment via Bartolini/DPD courier. To use the insurance coverage, any damage to the package must be contested and reported to the courier at the time of delivery. Otherwise, it will not be possible to activate the insurance reimbursement procedure. Fragonard Jean Honoré (1732/ 1806): draughtsman De Saint-non Richard Jean Claude (1727/ 1791): engraver SAINT-NON, Jean-Claude Richard, abbot of (1727-1791). Collection of views, landscapes, ancient fragments and historical subjects by Grifonis. Paris, undated [circa 1750/1770]. Beautiful copy with the Stroganov coat of arms. Most of the compositions are inspired by masters of Italian and French painting, including Hubert Robert and Jean-Honoré Fragonard. It can happen that the collection’s arrangement varies from one copy to another – it is quite complete with all the suites, thus giving an overview of the masterpieces preserved in Rome, Naples, Bologna and Venice. This is a particularly important collection for the history of engraving: as Gordon Ray states, "nowhere else are there so many of those that could be called aqua-tinta incunabula, dating from the late 1760s to the early 1770s, between two covers". Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book from 1700 to 1914, I, 68; Brunet, V, col. 56; Cohen-de Ricci, cols. 930-931. In-folio (490 x 319 mm). First edition, first issue, without the note "La veuve Lavoye" on the plates. 295 plates engraved of various sizes, including: collection of views, landscapes, ancient fragments and historical subjects of Grifoni (1 title and 40 plates); Selected fragments from the paintings and artworks most interesting in the Palaces and Churches of Italy. First suite: Rome. (1 title and 27 plates); Second suite: Rome. (1 title and 25 plates); Fourth suite: Venice. (1 title and 37 plates); Third suite: Bologna.
