Jean Jacques de Boissieu, born November 29, 1736 in Lyon and died in Lyon on March 1, 1810, was a French artist, mainly a draftsman and engraver, but also a painter. During his lifetime he enjoyed great renown in France and Europe (Goethe, for example, collected his works); he was nicknamed by some the “French Rembrandt” (after the reference dictionary Bénézit). He is regarded as a founder of the Lyon School of painting. He specialized in portraits and landscapes and views of daily life in the Lyon region. His style, in its concern for realism, is linked to the Dutch school. In 1760 he visited Genoa, Naples, resided in Rome (1764–1765) and drew in museums and mainly from nature (…) he produced etchings, drawings in pencil and washes. With expressive portraits, he drew landscapes, either in pencil (graphite, sanguine, charcoal), or in wash. His oeuvre comprises 140 plates and a few pieces known by unique copies from the Städel Institute collection in Frankfurt am Main.
