Painter, gouache painter, draftsman. Morphed abstract artist. He was also a military aviator, parachute acrobat. He also worked in theater. In 1942, he was part of a symphony orchestra. He was a bar pianist, night watchman, radio announcer in Montpellier, where he lived. In the thirties, he had become acquainted with Henri Closon, one of the very first French abstract painters, who introduced him to painting. Since 1937, he took part in the rare abstract art exhibitions organized in France. He did not devote himself entirely to painting until after 1942. In 1949, with Francis Bott and Michel Seuphor (a major figure in abstract art), he organized an abstract art exhibition at the Musée de Nîmes. From 1950, he participated in the Paris Salon des Réalités Nouvelles. In 1950, the Montpellier Museum dedicated a personal retrospective exhibition to him. Until a new solo exhibition in Paris in 1993, at the Sculptures gallery, he had not publicly shown himself, while continuing to work. Throughout his career, his abstract compositions took on several approaches. At first, sometimes an uninterrupted arabesque left intertwined traces on the surface of the canvas, like the nostalgia of the ancient evolutions in the sky. Later he mainly used gouache for textural effects, less “airy” and outside gesturality, aiming more at dreamlike contemplation. In the 1970s, he abandoned gouache to turn toward drawing and collages. His pen drawings, of perfect rigor, recall the poetic graphics of his friend Michel Seuphor.
