The author, Jean Witt, was a complex and controversial figure, an adventurer and informant involved in the Carbonari intrigues and in the political conspiracies of the early nineteenth century. The text offers an internal analysis and unpublished extracts on the dynamics of the Carbonari, on revolutionary movements and on the esoteric-political networks of the period.
