Acrylic and conte crayon on paper, 1985, signed and dated at lower right, framed below glass. Sight size 39 3/4 x 31 3/4 in.; Frame dimensions 43 1/4 x 35 1/4 in. From the Estate of the Late Dr. Jesse Lamar White, Jr., Chapel Hill, North Carolina Jere Allen is an American figurative painter and educator born in Selma, Alabama. He studied at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, where he worked as a studio assistant to painter Frank Rampolla, and later earned his MFA from the University of Tennessee. In 1972, Allen joined the University of Mississippi, where he taught painting and drawing for 28 years and is now Professor Emeritus of Art. His career has included exhibitions throughout the United States, Germany, and Asia, including a Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service tour. Allen received the 1993 Visual Art Award from the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters and an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Mississippi Arts Commission. His work is represented in numerous public collections, including the Mobile Museum of Art and Huntsville Museum of Art. Good estate condition.
