All auctions / Furniture, Design & Mirrors / Jockey oder Sherlock Holmes - Meerschaum pipe...

Presented here is a fairly rare and masterfully carved Vienna era (around 1900) Meerschaum pipe, Historicist / Belle Époque. Includes the original leather case, lined with violet velvet and silk-metal clasp intact. Beautiful age-appropriate patina! The pipe itself is made of high-quality materials—Meerschaum, honey-colored amber, and presumably silver- or metal-gussets (holm ring) with delicate etching! The motif of the pipe head: It is by no means an antique or Oriental figure, but rather the expressive portrait of a jockey or race rider with the typical jockey cap, or the famous Sherlock Holmes! This discovery makes the piece particularly charming and rare! • The motif: The cap is intricately carved with suggested fabric segments, a small button on top, and the characteristic stout brim. The sideburns and the pronounced facial features of the man match well. Pipe heads with sporty motifs—such as jockeys, hunters, or sailors—were especially popular in the Belle Époque (approx. 1890 to 1910) as gentlemen and club accessories among the bourgeoisie and nobility. The sought-after motif: Sporty motifs from the turn of the century (like jockeys or race riders) are rarer than the typical standard motifs (like sultan heads or simple animal motifs) and often fetch enthusiastic prices from collectors. • Material combination: The noble blend of a hand-carved meerschaum block, engraved silver cuff, and genuine, cloudy amber mouthpiece signals to the market the premium quality of the era. • Condition & patina: The pipe shows an authentic, even coloring and no cracks in the meerschaum or chips in the amber, which is essential for preserving value. Please note the richly detailed photos! Pipe dimensions approx.: 13 x 7.5 x 3 cm Case dimensions: 14 x 7.5 x 4.5 cm Dear buyers!
