Johann Caspar Lavater. Physiognomy or The Art of Knowing Men from the Traits of their Face, their relations with various animals, their inclinations, etc. Paris, Librairie française et étrangère, 1841, xvi-286 pp. and 119 plates. A quarto volume (270x190 mm), half morocco, smooth spine ornamented (binding of the period). Wear and rubbing on the boards, spine and edges, corners dulled. Interior fresh, rare foxing. New edition adorned with 119 plates (out of 120). Lavater develops in this work his theory of physiognomy, according to which the examination of the features, the proportions and the expression of the face would allow recognizing the dispositions and the character of a person. He notably relates human physiognomies to those of various animals and successively studies the forehead, the eyes, the nose, the mouth, the chin, the profiles and the general shapes of the head.
