John Albert Leonard French (1869–1957) - Danish Landscape at Sunset

Atmospheric Danish rural landscape at sunset, signed “John French” and dated 1908, attributed to John Albert Leonard French (1869–1957). A finely composed panoramic landscape depicting a solitary country house set against rolling fields at dusk. The restrained palette of deep greens and browns contrasts beautifully with the warm pink and orange evening sky, creating a quiet and highly evocative Scandinavian atmosphere. The work is signed in the lower right corner “John French” and appears to be dated 1908. The reverse bears several old handwritten inscriptions, including the name “J. French”, together with further Danish inscriptions and historic ownership or inventory markings, which add interest to the provenance and history of the work. The painting is executed in oil on canvas, mounted on board, and is presented in an elegant black frame with a gilt inner border, particularly well suited to the tonality of the composition. Dimensions: Painting: 47 × 25 cm With frame: 55 × 33 cm The work shows age-related wear and irregularities consistent with an early 20th-century painting, including visible wear to the canvas edges and surface. These aspects are clearly shown in the photographs and contribute to the authentic character of the piece. A charming and atmospheric early 20th-century Scandinavian landscape, appealing both as a decorative work and as a signed period painting with interesting inscriptions and provenance clues on the reverse.
