All auctions / Books, Maps & Manuscripts / John Gould (1804–1881) - Lesser Melampitta / Melampitta Lugubris
"Melampitta Lugubris" features a beautifully detailed natural history study showing a pair of dark-plumaged birds with striking bright red eyes situated within a meticulously rendered grassy and moss-covered landscape. The composition captures one bird standing prominently on the mossy ground while its companion perches closely behind, emphasizing their distinctive form and texture within an atmospheric, native environment. This exquisite hand-colored plate functions as a definitive scientific and visual documentation published in London as part of a monumental publication recording rare and distinct avian species. John Gould was an eminent English ornithologist and artist who, alongside his talented team of lithographers, revolutionized natural history illustration with his vast multi-volume folios depicting the world's avian populations.
