All auctions / Silver & Gold / John Linnit. A very unusual George III Standing Snuff Canister made

The Canister has an oval, plain, form, with cast floral border at the base and on the cover, which also displays a slightly protruding thumbpiece. The cover opens up to reveal a finely gilded interior and a full, crisp, set of hallmarks inside, in the base, and a maker's mark, sterling mark and date letter on the underside of the cover. The front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Crest above a set of script initials. It is most unusual to find a standing snuff canister being made in London, as they are often Scottish in origin. This example was made by John Linnit who was an exceptional box maker, who made some of the finest snuff boxes and vinaigrettes during this period. He his first mark was registered as a gold worker in partnership with William Atkinson on 24th July, 1809. He was working alone by April 1815 and had premises at 9, Craven buildings, Drury Lane, London, when this box was made. The box is made of a good gauge of silver, as to be expected from this maker. Height: 2.5 inches, 6.25 cm. Length: 1.6 inches, 4 cm. Width: 1 inch, 2.5 cm.
