José Herreros Galán (1928-2019) - The Spanish Steppe

- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. - Like a prophet who refuses the pomp of official honors in search of the truth in the patina of the earth, José Herreros rises in the pantheon of Spanish art as a devoted apostle to safeguarding spirit and matter. Immune to the banality of inflated résumés and the servitudes of academic dogma, his life was a devout pilgrimage of self-discovery and ardent research, fed in the free ateliers of the Circle of Fine Arts and tempered by the rigor of a destiny that greatly surpassed the postwar gloom. In the manner of the great visionaries of the Vallecas School and of Postism, Herreros did not paint for mere decoration, but out of an imperious mystical need to give voice to desolation and to the dignity of the people. Every stroke of his hands, whether oils, engravings, or colossal murals, became a trench against oblivion, a sacred effort to rescue threatened beauty and to ignite a celebration of rhythm, color, and truth where tenderness and contained rage celebrate their sacred communion. In the figure of Pepe Herreros beats the demiurgical genius of a master capable of transfiguring the light of the world, aware that true art demands the jealous devotion of a life given to its creature. From the volcanic horizons of his native La Mancha to the cold mists of Denmark and Sweden that acclaimed his mastery on Europe’s covers, his brush acted as a chromatic oracle, elevating to the status of eternal icons the humble peasants, reapers, and maternities around him. Direct heir to Velázquez’s depth and to Cubist audacity, he not only immortalized in stone, bronze, and fresco the soul of his time, but, in a supreme act of Franciscan generosity, selfless and patriotic, surrendered the entirety of his legacy as an eternal inheritance to the land that gave him birth. His work is not merely a catalog of finite creations, but a cathedral of Castilian-Manchegan memory, where time does not destroy but sanctifies and perfects the immortality of his art. - Dimensions of the unframed image: 100 x 81 cm / 116 x 97 cm with a magnificent carved wood frame made to measure.
