This intriguing composition by José Moreno Carbonero, known as “The Broken Tooth, ” is a magnificent example of the history and genre painting cultivated by one of the great Spanish masters of the late 19th century. The scene depicts the moment immediately following a battle, in which a wounded soldier is tended to by a comrade, while horses, abandoned weapons, and other figures in the background complete a narrative of great dramatic intensity. Far from exalting military heroism, the artist focuses attention on the human aspect of war, employing a balanced composition and an extraordinary mastery of drawing, anatomy, and perspective. The precise brushwork, the brilliant rendering of light, and the meticulous landscape reflect Moreno Carbonero’s solid academic training, making him one of the leading figures of Spanish history painting and the author of some of the genre’s most emblematic compositions.
