Oil on canvas, signed at the lower left, framed. Stretcher size 10 x 8 1/4 in.; Frame dimensions 12 1/2 x 10 in. Joseph De Martini was an American modernist painter born in Mobile, Alabama, who studied at the National Academy of Design under Leon Kroll and Ivan Olinsky and at the Art Students League of New York. During the 1930s, he participated in the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project and became associated with the artists' colony on Monhegan Island, Maine, where he spent summers beginning in the mid-1940s. He gained national recognition for his coastal landscapes, seascapes, and figurative paintings, exhibiting at the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Corcoran Gallery of Art. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1951, a gold medal from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1952, and was elected a National Academician in 1953. His work is represented in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Phillips Collection, and Farnsworth Art Museum. Light surface grime.
