Obv: Paleo-Hebrew in classic style יהוחנן הכהן הגדל וחבר היהודים (Yehohanan the High Priest and [the] Council of the Jews) within wreath. Rev: Two cornucopias splayed outward, adorned with ribbons, pomegranate/poppy between. Reference: Hendin, Guide to Biblical Coins, 6th edition, types 6171-6172. John Hyrcanus I was a Hasmonean ruler and high priest of Judaea who greatly expanded the kingdom’s territory and political independence. He campaigned in Samaria, Idumaea and Transjordan, strengthened Jerusalem, and developed an increasingly centralized state. His reign marked the transformation of the Hasmonean realm from a revolt-born polity into a powerful regional kingdom.
