Roman, Imperial period, Judea. A small globular glass jar, covered with close-set, shallow indentations that overlap like fish scales or netting. A short cylindrical neck rises to a broad, flat disc rim folded at the edge. Inside the neck the passage narrows to a constricted, corseted throat. This feature was likely meant to meter out precious contents such as scented oil or unguent a few drops at a time, so they were not lost in a spill. The glass was originally pale green. Burial weathering has given it a silvery, iridescent skin with flashes of blue and violet and patches of gray mineral encrustations. The dimpled pattern was likely produced by blowing the glass into a mold. Item # 205013
