The item will be shipped in a certified envelope (with tracking number). Good protection will be used so that the lot does not suffer damage. Ian Thorpe is an Australian swimmer, nicknamed Thorpedo and Thorpey. He won five gold medals at the Olympic Games, the highest tally achieved by any Australian athlete, and in 2001 he became the only person to win six gold medals in a single World Swimming Championship. In total, Thorpe won 11 gold medals at this competition, the second-highest tally by any swimmer. Thorpe is the only person along with Michael Phelps to be named World Swimmer of the Year four times by Swimming World Magazine, and he was Australian Athlete of the Year from 1999 to 2003. His athletic achievements have made him one of Australia’s most popular athletes, and with his philanthropy and clean image he was recognized as Australian of the Year 2000. At 14, he became the youngest man to represent Australia, and his victory in the 400 meters freestyle at the Perth World Championships made him the youngest World Champion in that event. After that victory, Thorpe dominated the 400 meters freestyle, winning every event at the Olympic Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, until the end of his career after the 2004 Olympic Games. In addition to 13 world records in individual events, Thorpe established himself firmly in the Australian relay teams, adding to his statistics victories in 4×100 m and 4×200 m freestyle relays in Sydney, along with his five world records as a relay. His victories in the 200 m and 400 m and his bronze in the 100 m at the Athens Olympics make him the only person to win medals in the 100-200-400 combination. After the Athens Games, Thorpe took a one-year break from swimming, planning a return for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. However, he was forced to withdraw from competition due to an infectious mononucleosis attack. Subsequent training planned in the United States was canceled and he announced his retirement from competition on November 21, 2006 at the age of 24, arguing lack of motivation. On March 31, 2007, it was announced that Thorpe may have had problems due to an abnormal result of a blood test, which contained a high level of testosterone. The Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) confirmed that there was an appeal regarding the validity (or relevance) of the positive tests from May 2006, but did not specify which Australian swimmer filed the appeal. In early 2011, Thorpe announced at a press conference his return to competition to participate in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
