JUSTUS SUSTERMANS (FLEMISH 1597-1681) AND STUDIO PORTRAIT OF A LADY THOUGHT TO BE MARGHERITA DI COSIMO II, DUCHESS OF PARMA, WEARING A WHITE SATIN DRESS WITH GOLDWORK, A STRING OF LARGE PEARLS AND A JEWELLED HEAD ORNAMENT Oil on canvas 117.5 x 95.5cm (46¼ x 37½in.) Provenance: Lonsdale Family collection formerly from Kingston Lisle Park Born in Antwerp, Sustermans registered in 1609 as a pupil of Willem de Vos at the city’s Guild of Saint Luke. Ten years later, in 1620, at the age of twenty-three, he is said to have joined a company of tapestry weavers who had been sent from Paris to Florence by Cosimo II, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Through their agency, he was introduced to the notice of the Grand Duke, who dissuaded him from travelling to Rome, as he had intended, and instead commissioned him to work at the Medici court. Sustermans remained in the service of the Medici family as court painter to three generations until his death in 1681. He painted numerous portraits of members of the Medici family, drawing upon a repertoire of established compositional formulas and adapting them to individual sitters. Characteristic, as can be seen in the present portrait, is the artist’s accomplished rendering of richly embellished and bejewelled clothing. The portrait shares striking similarities, particularly in the treatment of the dress, with the full-length portrait of Margherita di Cosimo II in the Pitti Palace, Florence, which was painted on the occasion of her marriage to Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma.
