The Hollandsche Spectator - Justus van Effen - Amsterdam, Hermanus Uytwerf 1731/1735 - parts 9 and 10 in one volume - First edition - 240, 240 pp - half-leather binding Fairly worn with some shelf and bump marks; head of spine slightly frayed. Text block solid in the binding. Interior browned, some spots, only foxing spots Justus van Effen became known for his edition of the Hollandsche Spectator, which appeared from August 1731 to April 1735. Although he had a few regular collaborators, most pieces were written by Van Effen himself. He comments on the Dutch spirit, frugality, zeal for cleanliness, excessive eating and drinking habits, and provincialism. His style is rationalizing, sober. Van Effen’s famous novella Kobus and Agnietje first appeared in the magazine in 1733. The Hollandsche Spectator was initially a weekly, but from its 21st issue in 1732 it appeared biweekly.
