Justus VAN EFFEN. Le Misantrope: containing diverse discourses on the manners of the century. New edition, augmented with several discourses on the character of the strong-minded and the incredulous: with a curious account of a journey to Sweden. Printed for Jean Neaulme, The Hague, 1742. Two volumes bound in 12mo, (4)-XX-496 and (4)-528 pages. Contemporary marbled calf bindings, spines with raised bands, title and volume-numbering pieces, ornate compartments, red edges. Bindings slightly worn, headcaps intact - corners worn. Interior in good condition. Complete collection of Le Misantrope written by Justus Van Effen. It was during his tutorship in the Wassenaer van Duivenvoorde family in The Hague that Van Effen, a young ambitious man, became known through his weekly Le Misantrope, the first continental imitation of Steele and Addison’s Spectator and Tatler. Le Misantrope began on May 19, 1711 and continued uninterrupted, appearing every Monday until December 29, 1712.
