KAHMEN (Volker) — Is Photography an Art? Paris, Éditions du Chêne, 1973 [some bibliographies list 1974]. In-8, 232 pp., publisher’s binding with an illustrated photographic dust jacket, numerous black-and-white photographic reproductions. Translated from German by Anne Frejer. French edition of *Fotografie als Kunst*, published in Tübingen by Wasmuth in 1973. The book includes 370 photographic reproductions. ISBN 2-85108-006-7. Institutional catalogs list 232 pages and a format of approximately 25 cm. An important work in the historiography of photography from the 1970s. Kahmen focuses specifically on the gradual recognition of photography as an autonomous artistic medium, contrasting its technical history with the evolution of its aesthetic status. The illustrations form an essential part of the book: Bayard, Daguerre, Hill, Lartigue, and others, spanning from the early experiments of the 19th century to modern photography. The photographs you show illustrate this historical ambition very well: Hippolyte Bayard’s views of mills from 1839 and 1842 appear alongside a daguerreotype from 1839, followed by images by David Octavius Hill and Jacques-Henri Lartigue. This copy retains its illustrated dust jacket, which is a nice touch. The binding appears sound and the interior is clean. However, the dust jacket shows fairly significant wear: rubbing, small superficial losses, wear on the head and foot, a tear/fold at the bottom of the front cover, and traces of old labels having been torn off on the sides of the front cover.
