KAISERLICHE PORZELLANMANUFAKTUR WIEN "Terrine mit Deckel und Präsentierplatte

Kaiserliche Porzellanmanufaktur Wien. Sorgenthal-Periode, um 1770–1810. Porzellan. | IMPERIAL Vienna Porcelain Manufactory “Important Museum-Quality Splendid Tureen with Lid and Presentation Platter from the Collection of Baron Henri de Rothschild” 1770–1810 Imperial Vienna Porcelain Manufactory. Sorgenthal period, circa 1770–1810. Porcelain. Elongated, transversely ribbed body with relief-moulded, shaped rim. Polychrome, finest overglaze decoration with large summer flower bouquets in the style of the “German Flowers” (tulips, iris, peonies) together with scattered individual blossoms. The lateral branch-shaped handles are modelled in the round and heightened in green and purple. The domed lid with a sculptural finial in the form of a leafy branch loop tied with a purple ribbon. On the undersides of the pieces, each bears the characteristic blue underglaze Viennese shield mark (“beehive mark”) from the period 1770–1810. Good, age-appropriate condition with minimal craquelure and glaze wear as well as kiln-related firing imperfections. The large serving platter shows a centrally running hairline crack, professionally restored. The historically significant collection and gallery labels are browned with age, but perfectly legible. Provenance: Collection of Henri de Rothschild (1872–1947), Paris (verso with the characteristic printed paper labels “COLLECTION de Monsieur le BARON HENRI DE ROTHSCHILD” as well as two original red wax seals on each piece); Maison Popoff Antiquités, Paris, 86 Faubourg Saint-Honoré (with corresponding gallery labels on the undersides of lid and vessel). Private collection, Germany. This magnificent, museum-quality tureen with its matching presentation platter stands out not only for its outstanding craftsmanship from the golden age of the Imperial Vienna Porcelain Manufactory under the direction of Konrad von Sorgenthal, but also for its complete and historically compelling provenance. The ensemble comes from the celebrated collection of Henri de Rothschild. As a member of the French branch of the legendary Rothschild banking dynasty, Henri de Rothschild pursued an unusual path: he built a highly successful career as a physician and philanthropist, financed among other things the radium research of Marie Curie, and at the same time distinguished himself as a passionate art collector, founder of theatres, and playwright. The characteristic paper labels of the Collection de Monsieur le Baron Henri de Rothschild and the original red wax seals on the undersides of the pieces testify to the meticulous inventorying and the high esteem in which this imperial Viennese porcelain was held within his Parisian collection. The path of this tureen into the art market reflects the profound ruptures of the 20th century. Following the occupation of France during the World War II, the Jewish Baron was stripped of his citizenship by the Vichy regime, and his entire art collection was confiscated by the National Socialists. After the war, the looted treasures were restituted to his heirs. A large portion of these high-calibre works was sold in the post-war years through the Parisian elite gallery Maison Popoff Antiquités on the famous Faubourg Saint-Honoré, as evidenced by the surviving gallery labels on the objects. Thus, this lot unites masterful Viennese Classicism with a provenance of world-historical significance. SHIPPING TO THE USA MUST BE ARRANGED BY THE BUYER.
