Kaitag Textile

96 x 57 cm (3' 2" x 1' 10") Caucasus, 18th century Condition: very good, slight abrasions, slight signs of use Silk on cotton A surprisingly large number of these embroideries from Dagestan are made on a blue, hand-woven cotton ground. Red or white grounds are less common, while green is extremely rare. Whether this choice of color had a special meaning - after all, the embroideries were intended, among other things, to cover children's cradles - or whether it was due to other circumstances remains unclear. At the end of life, these textiles took on yet another, entirely different function: they were placed over the face of the deceased. A textile from the cradle to the grave. Only a very limited number of these expressive embroideries exist. Although their patterns can sometimes be attributed to specific groups, each piece is ultimately highly individual in design. For our specimen, there is no direct comparison to be found in Robert Chenciner's groundbreaking book Kaitag - Textile Art from Daghestan. At best, pieces nos. 141-144, with their interconnected circular medallions and swastika swirls, offer a certain resemblance. There, too, semicircles feature in the composition, but aside from the missing halo and the different secondary motifs, the overall impression differs significantly from our piece. However, on January 27, 2024, we were fortunate enough to sell a piece on a dark blue background - one that could almost be described as a "sister piece" - for a comparatively reasonable €9,500. Apart from the darker background color, the main difference is that a cross is depicted in the center instead of the "octopod." This embroidery features lighter colors overall, giving it a somewhat lighter feel, and its design also appears more playful. A direct comparison of the two pieces makes it clear just how freely the embroiderers were able to design their compositions within what appears to be a shared vocabulary of designs. Estimate: € 10000 - 15000 Starting bid: € 6000
