All auctions / Arts & Graphics / Kara Elizabeth Walker (American, b.1969) 'Freedom, a Fable'

illustrated with laser-cut pop-up silhouettes designed by David Eisen, an edition of 4000 commissioned by the Peter Norton Family Foundation to celebrate the 1997 Christmas season, printed and manufactured in the United States of America, David Eisen, 23.5 x 21cm, Property from the Estate of Doris Lockhart Saatchi. Please note this work is to be offered with no reserve. The work explores racist stereotypes and representations of Black people that developed through 18th- and 19th-century literature, minstrel shows and art. It follows a newly emancipated Black woman, addressing themes of freedom, power, repression and the reality of life after emancipation. Walker uses Victorian-style silhouettes and pop-up forms inspired by children's books, creating a playful appearance that contrasts with the work's darker historical themes. The title suggests both a fable with a moral lesson and the idea that freedom can be presented as a false promise. By creating the work as a book, Walker directly involves, the viewer, making them physically interact with and confront its imagery. The work was commissioned as a holiday art edition for the Peter Norton family and produced in a limited edition of 4,000 copies. Condition Report, Condition Report, Presents well.
