ABOUT THE ARTIST Karel Appel was one of the leading figures of the European avant-garde in the second half of the 20th century and one of the founders of the CoBrA movement in 1948–1949. His work is characterized by spontaneous, gestural painting with great chromatic intensity, inspired by children’s art, primitivism, and free expression—in opposition to academic conventions and geometric abstraction. His figures and animals, with their distorted forms and vibrant colors, evolved into an increasingly energetic and textural visual language. In addition to painting and sculpture, Appel produced a significant body of graphic work, particularly lithographs and other printmaking techniques. His work is represented in collections such as that of the Museum of Modern Art, which holds numerous works by the artist.
