Karl Friedrich Bell (1877–1958) - Das alte Lied vom Sterben

Karl Friedrich Bell (Vienna, 1877–1958). "Das alte Lied vom Sterben" ("The Old Song of Dying"), c. 1927. Etching on cream-colored paper. Signed in the plate with a monogram within the title cartouche. Dimensions: 24 x 17 cm. Mounted in a mat and framed under glass: 27.5 x 27.5 cm. A magnificent etching by this Austrian artist. The piece engages with the classic iconography of *Vanitas* and *Memento mori*, blending the narrative of the Original Sin (Adam, Eve, and the serpent) with the inevitable presence of death looming over humanity (represented by a skeleton with an hourglass). This is likely not from one of the earliest printings of the plate: the figures of the couple already feature cross-hatched shading, though other elements—such as their faces and the body of the serpent—do not yet exhibit the appearance they would take on in later impressions. Difficult to find. This copy comes from the artist’s estate. We find his work truly fascinating. Professional packaging with all security measures.
