The railcar earned the nickname "Fliegender Hamburger" and was used from 1933 as a high-speed train on the Berlin–Hamburg route. The railcar had a maximum speed of 160 km/h. The streamlined body of the railcar was developed through wind tunnel testing. Additionally, the construction was a lightweight design. Both parts were equipped with a diesel-electric drive using a 12-cylinder Maybach GO-5 diesel engine with a power of 302 kW (420 hp) each.
