All auctions / Glass / Kato Takuo (Japanese, 1917-2005), Vase with Handle

Stoneware, turquoise glaze running over deeply carved lines to the mouth and body, the lobed rim modelled as a flower, lustrous gold highlights to the handle, painted maker's mark, together with a signed wooden box H 23.2cm, D 10.5cm PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Cornwall REFERENCE: Kato Takuo came from a lineage of Japanese potters, and was the sixth generation head of their Mino ware kiln. He was also recognised in 1995 as a Living National Treasure for his 'sansai' or 'three-colour' wares. He was very inspired by historic Persian ceramics, which he encountered first-hand during visits to Iran, particularly lustreware which flourished in Kashan from the 12th century, and also Persian blue and three-colour wares. He studied these works and went on to recreate traditional techniques in his own making. This inspiration is evident in the form of this vase, taken from a Persian ewer, and the vivid turquoise glaze and use of gold. CONDITION: Perfect condition with no damage or restoratio ceramics
